Our Favorite Cases of 2023

At Hilltop Bio, we combine science with compassion. Every year, we see cases that we are proud to play a part in helping remedy. The end of the year is here and we want to highlight some of the amazing cases our veterinarians have submitted to us using our line of cutting edge regenerative therapy products.

Regenaflex-M

Wounds happen all the time and when they are bad, Regenaflex-M can be a handy option to grab off the vet truck and apply in the moment. Regenaflex-M is a sterile membrane that helps to reduce healing time, scar tissue development, risk of infection, and adhesions, while promoting healthy re-epithelialization.

This case came from Dr. Jennifer Safford at Oakencroft Equine in Upstate NY. Dr. Safford was very concerned about an infection developing in the fetlock joint when she first saw this horse. She debrided the wound, sutured it closed, and contacted Hilltop Bio about a Regenaflex-M wound membrane.

14 days after her initial examination of the horse, Dr. Safford applied the membrane. Upon recheck a week later, Dr. Safford was pleased with how the wound was closing. Dr. Safford and the owner discussed using another membrane, but the owner opted for medicated honey instead. Dr. Safford stated, “I still think we’re weeks ahead of where we would have been without the membrane.”

A few days later, Dr. Safford removed the original sutures, and over the next couple weeks, the wound was rechecked. The owner had continued to apply medicated honey during these weeks. Dr. Safford rechecked the wound and noted how well the horse was doing. She stated, “He’s turned out full time and doing so well. Shocking how well.”

Regenaflex-RT

This case comes from Dr. Michael Fugaro at Mountain Pointe Equine in New Jersey. This 23 year old semi retired show hunter presented with a medial suspensory branch desmitis and a deep digital flexor tendonitis immediately proximal to the tendon sheath. Another vet who originally examined the horse recommended that the horse be fully retired. The owner and Dr. Fugaro decided to try Regenaflex-RT via a regional limb perfusion with hopes that the horse would become flatwork sound for the owner to continue riding.

The scans are at 60 and just under 120 days post regional limb perfusion. The scans show a nice filling in of the original desmitis and tendonitis. This horse is currently flatting sound and in work 3-4 days a week with his owner.

Strydaflex

Joint injections can be quite common for the equine athlete. As the joint endures more wear and tear, the synovium starts to wear away and inflammation can concur. Strydaflex is an intra-articular injectable specifically formulated for joints. Strydaflex helps slow the inflammatory cascade down in the joint, helps to return it to a happy state, and then supports the  regeneration of the synovium.

When Megan Prager’s horse, Charley, started to feel like he didn’t have enough pep in his step behind, she asked her veterinarian about Hilltop Bio’s Strydaflex. Here’s what Megan had to say:

After noticing some hind-end weakness in my horse – lacking impulsion, jumping unevenly, decreased cranial phase of stride, and protecting his right side – I knew I needed to look into treatment options to get him back to his best. I specifically wanted to look into treatment options that were non-steroidal due to his young age, and came across Hilltop Bio’s Strydaflex. After evaluation and discussion with my veterinarian, we decided to inject his stifle joints with Strydaflex. What a difference it has made! Charley is jumping much straighter, landing even coming off the jumps, tracking up well behind with excellent impulsion, and feeling stronger than ever. He is much more comfortable and it’s showing in the show ring. I couldn’t be happier with the results since using Strydaflex!

Regenaflex-Gel

Summer sores and weepy wounds can be common in the barn. This show pony was supposed to show at the prestigious Hampton Classic Horse show and just 3 weeks before he was ready to go, a summer sore popped up. The owner applied 2 drops of Regenaflex-Gel to the summer sore morning and afternoon and was impressed with how well the sore started healing prior to the horse show. In less than a month, the summer sore was just about gone!

PureOptic

Eye ailments can go south quickly and can be tricky to manage. PureOptic is a viscous ophthalmic liquid that may be administered as eye drops or via sub palpebral lavage (SPL). In other regenerative eye products, the active ingredient consists primarily of micronized membrane. While membrane alone can have positive effects, research has shown that it does not provide the same level of cell-signaling as our proprietary formulation of exosomes, growth factors, and other proteins to stimulate the healing process. This case was a horse with a corneal ulcer that was treated with PureOptic via a SPL for 5 days.

Regenaflex-K9

Our canine product line has grown quite a bit this year! Regenaflex-K9 has been a popular choice for canine veterinarians to administer for soft tissue injuries in dogs. Shiloh presented with a left front leg lameness to Dr. Peggy Minnich of Aquia-Garrisonville Animal Hospital. Shiloh had been lame for about a year and had been receiving oral joint supplements. Shiloh was also not a fan of going to the veterinarian; he had severe anxiety during car rides and was very nervous at the vet’s office making frequent visits a difficult option. Dr. Minnich initially treated Shiloh’s shoulder with shockwave therapy. This improved Shiloh’s lameness by about 70%. Wanting to resolve the lameness completely, Dr. Minnich administered just one dose of Regenaflex-K9 and after two weeks, Shiloh was 100% sound. Regenaflex-M

Amira was a 12-week old puppy when she was surrendered to the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society. Amira had had an accident in her previous owner’s house and had been doused in acid as punishment. Dr. Lucretia Greear of Woodhaven Animal Hospital took over Amira’s case and used Regenaflex-M to help heal Amira’s burn wounds. See Amira’s case in Newsweek!

Regenaflex-M

On March 29, 2023, Dr. Izzy Wayner of John R. Steele & Associates treated this horse with a shoulder, stifle, and hip laceration. The horse had spooked at a garbage truck driving by, gotten loose, and fell on the pavement. The shoulder had dirt and gravel in it, so Dr. Wayner flushed it with sterile saline and antibiotics. She then placed one of three cut pieces of a Regenaflex-M wound membrane on and covered it with a non-stick pad, and a pad of gauze with suture loops. A small stent was placed below so that the wound could drain properly. Over the next few days, Dr. Wayner checked on the wound and utilized the two other cut pieces of Regenaflex-M.

Upon recheck on April 12, 2023, Dr. Wayner noticed nice tissue granulation around the wound. The yellowing at the edges demonstrated the membrane was breaking down into the wound. Dr. Wayner cleaned around the wound, but not directly on it as to leave the membrane in place.

The wound was rechecked on May 4, 2023 and was much smaller in size. The barn manager was utilizing a topical silver spray to keep the wound covered and clean.

On June 22, 2023, Dr. Wayner rechecked the wound and was impressed with how well the wound had healed in less than 12 weeks. The horse had originally had smaller lacerations on the hip and stifle that were too small to use the membrane on. Dr. Wayner noticed that after three months, the hip and stifle areas had scarred worse than the shoulder where Regenaflex-M was utilized. On October 24, 2024, the wound was barely noticeable with a small scar.
