Myth Busting: Regenerative Therapy Misconceptions

Amnion therapies and regenerative therapy are still relatively new technologies that are advancing in the field of veterinary medicine. However, as such, there can be some misconceptions about how they work and how they’re used. Let’s address some of the “facts” versus “fiction” to help clear up some common questions or concerns.

MYTH: Regenerative therapies are only used for healing wounds or sports medicine.

FACT: While wound healing and sports medicine injuries are two common uses for regenerative therapies, literature has shown that they have also been used in a wide array of applications including eye injuries, osteoarthritis management, inflammatory disease management, and scar revision.

MYTH: Amnion and birth tissue-based therapy is brand new technology.

FACT: Amnion therapies are getting more attention in recent years, but the first reported use of amnion as a therapy actually dates back to 1910, when amniotic membranes were first used as skin grafts. Even the use of amniotic fluid for orthopedic injuries dates back to 1938 when it was used in joints.

MYTH: Amniotic tissues can transmit blood-borne illnesses.

FACT: Yes, amniotic tissues can transmit certain diseases. However, Hilltop Bio has a rigorous screening process before amniotic tissues can be accepted for processing. All mares’ medical and travel history is viewed prior to acceptance. Afterward, blood work is done by a certified lab prior to collection of birth tissues. From there, a third-party lab tests for tick-borne disease, EIA, Brucella, and other diseases to ensure the safety of the tissues.

MYTH: Amniotic regenerative therapies have to be kept refrigerated or frozen.

FACT: While many therapies do require refrigeration or freezing, Hilltop Bio’s amnion therapies can be stored at room temperature and are ready to use the same day as diagnosis so patients can begin healing as soon as possible. No additional processing is needed, so that’s one step closer to treatment.

MYTH: Regenerative therapies always need multiple treatments to work effectively.

FACT: Occasionally, large, external wounds may need multiple treatments, but many applications only need one treatment. Fewer treatments mean more time back in your busy schedule and cost savings for your clients.

MYTH: When using a regenerative therapy like amnion, additional therapies cannot be used.

FACT: It’s often not a “this or that” solution when it comes to treatment options. NSAID’s and other pain mediating medicines can be used in moderation. There are many rehabilitation treatments that can be used in conjunction with our birth tissue-based products. Some of these therapies include shockwave, ultrasound, pool therapy, and active rehabilitation.

Deciding on what therapies to use for your patients can sometimes be a complex decision. It can be difficult to cut through the clutter of data and studies to know what’s what with new technologies. Hilltop Bio’s amnion therapies can be used for a wide array of applications, and literature has shown them to accelerate healing, minimize inflammation, and reduce scar tissue formation.
