Case Report: Pumpkin, an 8 Year Old Black Mouth Cur Mix with Chronic Lameness

Author: Dr. Rachel Ramesar, DVM, CAC, CVA, CVCHM, CTCMVFT
Medical History
Pumpkin is an 8-year-old, spayed female Black Mouth Cur mix who initially presented with a right cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture in March 2020. She underwent an extracapsular repair, but experienced a recurrence of lameness two months post-operatively. At that time, it was suspected that either the repair had failed or a meniscal tear might have contributed to the ongoing discomfort. The owner opted against pursuing further surgical intervention for the right stifle. To manage Pumpkin’s condition, integrative treatments, including acupuncture, were initiated, which provided support for pain management and recovery.
Initial Evaluation and Treatment at Our Clinic
On 10 January 2022, Pumpkin presented to my clinic for evaluation, at which time we initiated chiropractic care while continuing acupuncture treatments. In April 2022, Pumpkin developed intermittent limping in her left hind limb, which progressively worsened. She was diagnosed with a cranial cruciate ligament rupture in the left stifle, prompting the decision to perform an extracapsular repair. Post-surgery, Pumpkin continued with regular acupuncture and chiropractic treatments every 4 to 6 weeks for maintenance care.
Chronic Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Since 2022, Pumpkin has experienced recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs), which have occurred monthly over the past year, a significant increase from her prior pattern of one UTI approximately every six months. It is hypothesized that the frequency of these infections may be exacerbated by poor posture during urination, potentially linked to her ongoing stifle pain.
Clinical Status as of Early 2025
On physical examination, crepitus is noted in both stifles, with the right stifle showing more pronounced changes. Pumpkin’s weight is 86 lbs, though her ideal weight is closer to 75 lbs. She tolerates both acupuncture and chiropractic care well, and her owner reports satisfaction with her progress, although Pumpkin still refrains from extended walks due to pain and exercise intolerance.
Regenerative Therapy (Regenaflex-K9)
In Fall 2024, we discussed the potential for Regenaflex-K9 therapy to complement Pumpkin’s ongoing treatment regimen. Regenaflex-K9 was administered on January 15th, 2025. During a follow-up visit on 13 March 2025, the owner reported the following positive changes:
- Increased energy and freedom of movement
- Initiation of play behaviors with housemate, previously absent
-
No UTIs reported since early January 2025 — the longest infection-free period in over a year
Plan and Prognosis
I will continue to provide treatment for Pumpkin every 6 weeks. We have already agreed that she will receive another Regenaflex-K9 injection in 6 months, or sooner if needed. Both the owner and I are pleased with her response to treatment, particularly the unexpected benefit of reducing the frequency of UTIs, which has significantly improved both Pumpkin’s well-being and her owner’s quality of life.
Conclusion
Pumpkin’s case highlights the potential for integrative therapies, including Regenaflex-K9, to provide significant improvements in mobility and overall health. The positive impact on both her physical function and urinary health underscores the multifaceted benefits of such treatments.
